JAIIB (Junior Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers) and CAIIB (Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers) are professional banking examinations conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF).
JAIIB focuses on foundational banking knowledge, while CAIIB covers advanced banking, financial management, regulations, risk and other specialized areas. CAIIB can be pursued after completing JAIIB.
• JAIIB Certification: Provides 1 increment in basic pay.
• CAIIB Certification: Provides 2 additional increments in basic pay.
For JAIIB, candidates must be IIBF members and have passed the 12th standard in any discipline.
For CAIIB, candidates must be IIBF members who have completed JAIIB (or Part I of the Associate Examination), with membership subscription not in arrears
JAIIB has four papers:
1. Indian Economy & Indian Financial System
2. Principles & Practices of Banking
3. Accounting & Financial Management for Bankers
4. Retail Banking & Wealth Management
CAIIB has four compulsory papers:
1. Advanced Bank Management
2. Bank Financial Management
3. Advanced Business & Financial Management
4. Banking Regulations & Business Laws
CAIIB also requires candidates to choose one elective from options such as Rural Banking, HRM, IT & Digital Banking, Risk Management and Central Banking
JAIIB and CAIIB examinations are conducted on a half-yearly basis, although IIBF may announce specific examination schedules and dates from time to time.
• First Cycle: Held typically in May / June.
• Second Cycle: Held typically in November / December
The passing criteria for both JAIIB and CAIIB exams conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF) require a minimum score of 50 out of 100 marks in each individual subject.
Alternatively, candidates securing at least 45 marks in each subject with 50% aggregate in a single attempt can also pass.
Candidates get 5 attempts within a maximum period of 3 years, whichever is earlier, to complete JAIIB or CAIIB.
The attempts do not have to be consecutive. Importantly, an attempt is counted when the candidate applies for the examination, even if they do not appear for the exam.
As per the current IIBF fee structure:
JAIIB: First attempt: ₹4,000
CAIIB: First attempt: ₹5,000
Subsequent attempts: ₹1,300 each
Applicable taxes and convenience charges are additional.
Both examinations are conducted online.
For JAIIB, the paper generally contains approximately 100 objective-type questions for 100 marks, with a 2-hour duration.
CAIIB papers contain 100 questions for 100 marks, including case-study/caselet-based questions. Some CAIIB papers may also include numerical questions where candidates have to enter the answer without options.
Negative marking has been deferred for now.
The most effective approach is to follow a structured study plan rather than trying to cover everything at once.
A practical preparation strategy is:
Concepts → IIBF syllabus → Banking updates → MCQs → Mock tests → Revision
Candidates should also keep themselves updated with relevant RBI/IIBF developments because banking regulations and practices can change.
